ISLAMABAD: Residents and drivers alike experienced significant difficulty on Friday as highways in the federal capital were blocked by students and associates of former Lal Masjid preacher Maulana Abdul Aziz and his wife Ume Hassan.
Shortly after Friday prayers, the demonstrators began their hours-long roadblocks in protest of the arrest of Ume Hassan, a fiery religious figure.
Traffic was suspended as a result of the demonstrators, the most of them were children, blocking Lal Masjid Municipal Road, Aabpara Chowk, and Srinagar Highway close to the Jinnah Sports Complex. Police contingents were sent to the three locations after learning about the state of law and order there in order to prevent any unfortunate incidents.
About 60 individuals stopped Aabpara Chowk, while more than 100 people, including at least 50 teens and young girls, participated in the demonstration on Srinagar Highway.
Additionally, police women were stationed on Municipal Road close to Lal Masjid, where more than fifty women impeded traffic.
The demonstrators called for the release of Ume Hassan, who was detained in relation to an assault on laborers, CDA employees, and police on Wednesday when a religious seminary was being built in Margalla Town.
